Sneak Peek: Christmas Cards!

I want to share some of the Christmas cards that we mailed out last week. I'm not going to get into how busy the last few weeks have been because, well, hasn't everyone in the world been swamped for the last month? But I managed to sit down and spend some time on some crafty cards and I was pretty happy with the results.

They took the better part of a Sunday but it was really nice to just sit quietly and work on something with my hands. Initially, Chris and I had discussed drawing something and then silkscreening all the cards. But of course, the weeks got away from us and since I don't have the proper silkscreening emulsions, I couldn't really print them up at home. I decided instead, to use the things I had on hand: my typewriter, some watercolours and some thick cardstock. Above is the first stage of creation - I typed a simple message on each (nearly 30 of them!) and even remembered to make some of them bilingual!

Sweet Inspirations

My husband is a musician.
He loves music, makes music, analyzes music and must be in close proximity to music most of the time. I remember when we first started dating, I went to see one of his shows and he covered one of my favourite songs (smooth moves, eh?). It has been really great to be around someone who is so passionate about his craft. He constantly wants to get better, write more and just be able to perform. He's exposed me to a ton of music I never knew and I've learned a lot about subjects I would have never thought about before as he's also trained in theatre. He is the only person who has heard me/made me sing like I mean it, though I won't admit it.
A couple of years ago he won a Singer/Songwriter competition at Maxwell's Music House and was asked back this year to serve as a judge. I thought to make him a few little business cards just in case he wanted to "network."
I picked up some printed paper - it looks almost like wood veneer, doesn't it? - and went at it with the typewriter. I like their simplicity and I think the paper added just enough interest.
He liked them too!

Chris is playing tonight if anyone is in the Waterloo, Ontario area and I'm getting set to get spoiled with some live music. I'm very lucky sometimes!

Inspired Work Spaces

Dreaming of special work areas, since our new apartment is going to have a cute little nook for me to set up a desk and a small craft area. I love the vintage feel of the above images but more importantly, I like that the spaces look like you can actually get some work done there. Sometimes I see styled desks that look so "done" that I wonder, "Who finishes anything there?"
Also, the typewriter. Swoon.

Letter-Writing-Love

I have been a little all over the place this week. My apologies for the scattered posts!
One thing I did manage to do though, was shoot some of the letters I actually sat down and finished.
I always have great plans about sharing my letter-writing here but getting good images is a bit more complicated. For one, I am a novice with my camera, so sometimes I think I have it then when I pull up my images on my computer, they are not great. There's a lot of yellow in my kitchen - yellow walls and yellow-toned table - so if I don't have great lighting, specifically natural daylight, the images come out way too yellow. It's a lot of trial and error. The other thing that botches my photos of letter-writing is that sometimes I seal the letters up too soon!

So I hope you like the images. I shot two different letters, which I sent to two different ladies.
The first image shows the 16Sparrows stationery I purchased through one of my favourite blogs,
Letter Writers Alliance. It is, as you may have guessed, a blog dedicated to letter-writing and to everything related to letters like stamps, packaging and post offices.

I wrote both letters on my new typewriter.
Using the typewriter has been really lovely. It's type is slightly faded so the letters have a slightly old-fashioned look and I really like that it doesn't look like anything we see anymore. Even if you see type, it's rare to see typewriter type! My friend who received the letter from the first image has now requested that all my letters to her be typed. That makes me pretty happy as it just gives me another excuse to buy more pretty paper and send out more letters!
Writing on the typewriter is also an exercise in patience. It does not have corrector tape. So if I get too excited and start typing really fast, mistakes get made. I am forced to slow down, relax and think about everything I am going to write, every key I am going to push :)

Does anyone else like to sit and write letters?

Christmas Things!

Some special things from Christmas.
The little box was filled with homemade shortbread from a special friend.
The rest of the images are of my new typewriter and Suite Henry stamps!
My husband sure knows how to make me happy. He's too clever and sneaky! I had hinted at the typewriter and actually almost bought a new one online but he found this beauty at a thrift store.
I loooove typewriters. Their sounds, their looks and the type they produce. This one is from the seventies apparently. The stamps completely surprised me. I could never have guessed he would think of getting me them. They're going to be so useful and fun!
Good times ahead!

Sweet Drops

Some pop from Seventy Tree!
I love Kerry's whimsy and humour. Her personality is all over her drawings and collages.
Find her shop here and her blog here.
I really like the drops but I'm totally partial to that mint typewriter illustration.
Too lovely.

I Heart HearBlack

I am a sucker for paper goods.
Throw in some type and hand-made elements, and I basically want to hand over my coin purse.
I found this wonderful work on HearBlack blog. It's run by an adorable blonde, tanned couple living in paradise. No, seriously, they live in Hawaii. They won my heart when they described how fun it is to send packages to friends or to strangers!

I agree! With all my heart!

Typewriter Longings

This has been the wallpaper on my computer for a couple months now. I had just updated my fb status to "I want a typewriter." In some online coincidence, I found this image moments later. I love the look, love the colours, love the message.
