Interior Lust: Eye Swoon at Tales of Endearment

When I am imaging the whole "how would I do my house if I had a house and budget to do a house" dream, I am torn between different styles. There's a part of me that loves colour - I really really want a navy velvet couch and have for years now - especially jewel tones because of their saturation and the elegance they lend a space. But then I see black and white done right and well, that's always such an awesome combination. I go between liking the whole vintage/rustic/reclaimed vibe and then really simple modern design. I'm not sure if I'd be able to zero in on one look that fits me the best. I'm the worst shopper in the world. I'm so indecisive and have buyer's remorse almost instantly on a lot of what I shop for even if it's something that really is not a big deal in the function of my everyday life. I got a new phone. Bought a teal case on impulse at the store. Had had had to return it by the next day because I couldn't stop thinking about all the reasons it was driving me crazy, couldn't let go of how much better I thought the white case would be and couldn't let it go until I exchanged it. It's really quite pathetic!

But on to the lovely photos above. They are from interior designer Athena Calderone's home in Amagasett, NY and I think the whole house is just awesome. The vintage pieces are sobered by the modern lines and clean palette. The colour accents are eye-catching but not too much and the whole thing stinks with personality. It looks lived in and loved; curated yet cozy. I love how balanced and eccentric it is. This is the vibe I'd want for my space - cool but approachable. A discovery but first and foremost, a home.

Colour Cool: Julie Thevenot

It always blows my mind when a designer has a collection that spans several different mediums. How awesome is it to be able to design art and jewellery and clothing and do each so well? Taking a look at Julie Thevenot's shop proves that he work is really about designing a lifestyle and she executes it from top to bottom.  My favourite pieces were the Spirit Giant wall display and the Small Exile necklace. Both would fit quite nicely in my imaginary lifestyle.

Discovered over at Pennyweight.

Art at Home

These paper balls were part of our wedding decorations. I have been hanging onto them for just over two years now wondering how I could reuse them because I really loved their colours. A few nights ago, I found myself standing on a side table, pulling some black thread through each one and arranging them - at first randomly and then with a bit of a plan - to make this little installation for our bedroom. It's a great contrast against the dark blue wall (which for some reason is turning out black in these photos) but I love the shape they produced and they have been a welcomed pop of colour for the space.

We are trying to get a second wind for sprucing the apartment up, having only gotten to do some minor painting and hang a few pieces of art this past May before Felix arrived and we were too busy to care about anything else. I'm the worst for second winds whenever we move into a new space. I have lots of energy at the beginning but then I quickly lose steam. I wish I was better at the constant tweaking like some of my lady friends are but I'm just too lazy. There, I said it! I'm trying to be better about getting organized so that I feel better in our home. I have to just remind myself how happy I am when I put a little time into a project and get the awesome results above.

So here's to some constant improvements, some art at home and a little bit of colour in your life.

Sneak Peek: Christmas Cards - The Watercolour Edition

Stage two of the Christmas card project.
I decided on doing a sort of abstract Christmas tree in a variety of colours because why stick to red and green when you have a palette of shades.

Decor: Castle

I've featured Rachel Castle's art prints here before but now all I want are the wonderful little things for the home. Love the prints of the linens and the colour palette - especially now since I've been sleeping terribly. A nicer bed might make it all better, right? ;)

Castle is here.

Fall Fashion: Hound Design

The temperature definitely dropped this week. Actually, it felt like it dropped all in one go yesterday. I was out and about running a few different errands and I started feeling like I could not wear enough layers. Even on the sunny side of the street!
The model in the above campaign for Hound is certainly not wearing anywhere near what's necessary now but don't you wish that this is how all of our fall days looked? I could get used to the simple cuts and the subtle use of colour. But I don't think I could get used to shivering in the park. Another post for the inspiration board, I guess. At least until March or something.

Mail Out

Here are a few things I mailed out last week.
It's pretty great to have some fun stationery on hand for when the writing mood strikes or for special occasions. It definitely keeps it easy. I also find that the simplest way to keep sending out mail is to keep your stamps stocked. It makes everything less tedious and it doesn't suddenly become an errand. Now that I think about it though, you also have to keep track of addresses. That counts big time for mail.

Artsy Books

I've been meaning to take some photos of a few things around here (not just the cats, I promise!) but the batteries in my camera are finally dead so those posts will have to wait.
Instead of those, I offer up these images of some very cool books.
Can't decide what I love most, the gloss on those leather bound books or the very graphic, very black and white jackets in the second photo. Really very cool.
I included the last guys because I have a soft spot for roman numerals. They always remind me of the Saturday afternoon, a long long time ago, when my mother taught me how to read them. It's still very clear in my mind.

Seen here under "Booklover."

New York Street Style

Made a yummy little dinner for a friend last night.
Somewhere in the middle of everything we started chatting about NYC and how there's nothing quite like it. So in honour of that here's a little bit of New York Street Style from Jak&Jil - a yellow cab of course, some crazy shoes, bright colours and some ink art to give it all a bit of edge.

Terminal Mirage by David Maisel

Silent and stunning.
These images by David Maisel obscure any obvious details of location or time but their beauty resonates, doesn't it?

I'm really, really in awe of his work.

P.S. They're taken above the Great Salt Lake in Utah.

Daily Musings

Things that make me smile inside:
1. Paper goods full of colour inspiration.
2. A vintage card for our one year anniversary. This card is probably older than I am and definitely older than our marriage - here's hoping that if its fragile paper can survive, we can beat it with our love!
3. Crafty supplies, ready on my shelf.

Art - Solid Frog

How happy would I be to hang one of these on my wall?
I really love strong colour and form and while I have seen lots of "horse" art, the execution of this piece is refreshing and modern.  Art by Solid Frog!

I really need to sit down and take a bunch of images off my camera but days are a bit crazy and I've just gotten into The Tudors. Haven't fully decided if I like it yet but it's a good lazy tv night companion.

Beautiful Garbage - Liz Jones

Collected on shores and then colour-coded, these "Rubbish Rainbows" from Liz Jones really put a bright spin on recycling! I had spotted these here before we left for the cottage and couldn't get them out of my mind. I love how carefully she's categorized everything - who knew garbage could be so punchy?
Some vibrant art is exactly what I need for this morning, a little tired from a nice out with friends.

Vase on Vase - DIY from Sweet Paul

Sweet Paul spruced up some white vases by taking a picture of a pattern on a traditional blue and white vase and then use photo paper to make it a new design on the original pieces.
Oh the clever creativity!

Detail Work - Melissa Manful

Aren't these guys stunners?
The colours and intricate work are just so wicked cool.
Plus, my goodness! Quite the imagination to dream up such details.

Felt & Colour - Rachel Castle

Needing to get inspired to do some laundry and some packing...
I think these colourful art pieces from Rachel Castle are a good start.
They are felt on vintage linen and I love them even though I can't afford them.
