Hearth Magazine

I first heard about Hearth Magazine from a friend of mine who sent me a message that read, "you should submit something to this. This looks great!" So I got in contact with Brenda Fisher, editor of this wonderful new publication and I am happy to report that my writing will be featured in Vol. 2 of the magazine. 

I received the first issue just the other week and it is great. The magazine has an approachable, family-feel to it while still mixing in great stories and fresh photography. There is something really welcoming about it and I'm excited not only to be a part of the next but also to watch it grow.

That said, you can help support that growth by heading over to Hearth's Kickstarter campaign. They are almost at there goal but there are less than 46 hours to help get it funded.

Written Work: Uppercase Magazine and Lizz Aston

Not quite sure how it happened but I've forgotten to mention this exciting bit of news. The last little while has been rather busy/crazy/exhausting as my pathetic blogging habits demonstrate, I'm sure.


Uppercase Magazine, an independent publication for which I have great respect, published an article that I wrote about an amazing textile artist and crafter, Lizz Aston. The issue is out now and available either online or at fine retailers.


It was incredibly exciting to put the whole project together and rather surreal to see my name printed in an official capacity. Knowing that Uppercase considers themselves the magazine for "the creative and curious," I knew that I wanted to be a part of it, somehow. I met Aston through a silkscreening class she teaches at the Harbourfront Centre. The first night of class, she showed me her professional work and I was completely blown away! Sometime after the course finished, something clicked in my head and it dawned on me that her work would be a great fit for the magazine. I'll feature some detail shots of Aston's work tomorrow, so stay tuned.


I should also mention that I could not have put together such a cool feature without the awesome photography skills and professional knowledge of Natasha Bardin. We all had such a ball bringing the shoot together.

Papier Mache Magazine

Papier Mache magazine is giving me another reason to fantasize about moving to Australia. 
The publication has both digital and print editions and is all about creativity, design and art. 
There's awesome photography and styling, intelligent writing and all centered around children. It's nice to see such a sophisticate take on the world of kids that is still fun and charming.

Good and British

Things that make me feel good...


1. A copy of British Harper's Bazaar, simple and ethereal with Ms. Moss on the cover. The cover is gorgeous and just what I needed after my earlier rant about no art on modern day magazines.
See the conversation argued intelligently on Escapade.
2. Beautiful golden Royal postage on a special anniversary gift package from the U.K.
I like that the British post is termed "Royal Mail." Instant coolness.
3. The special gift! A silkscreening graphic map of London from Bold and Noble.

Vintage Vogue

Love the whimsy of these vintage VOGUE covers. 

Makes me wonder why the covers* have been so lacking for such a long time. 

I'm already pretty frustrated by the typical whatever-celebrity-has-a-new-movie-out-right-now selection of the cover girls - but seriously, why can't you do something beautiful like these?

Am I really supposed to believe that covers like these just would not sell a magazine?

*I should specify that my issue is mainly with the American edition of Vogue - I know that other editions like French or Italian Vogue, take more risks with their covers. And it's really not fair to single out only Vogue, most North American editions of the major publications tend to be on the stale side. I remember subscribing to ELLE not too long ago and being really upset that the subscription covers were completely different than the news stand covers - much more artistic and creative. Why not make the cool covers the real covers? Every single ELLE cover I see at the grocery store is a celebrity in front of a white background. Like an afterthought. Thanks for nothing, Gilles Bensimon.

New Magazine?! How Wonderful!

Put anything in magazine form and you've got me hooked. I have, for years, much to the bewilderment of family around me, spent countless hours reading and rereading magazines. It was primarily fashion at first (I was a teenage girl once, you know) but now I'll pick up lots of different kinds. I'm getting into more design magazines and there's one on photography in my purse right now!
I am always super-excited to find a new magazine, and when they're well-done? Well, pffft! That's even better. Please direct your attention now to the lovely images from Anthology magazine from  Anh-Minh Le and Meg Mateo Ilasco. It is a lifestyle, culture and design magazine and their first issue looks wonderful. (You can sneek-peek some more images when you click the title link above).
