Paper Cut Fancy

I have made no secret of how much I respect paper cut artists...
I am always blown away by the detail and I am always trying to mentally calculate the hours spent.
The above work is by Norwegian artist Karen Bit Vejle.

Blow-You-Away-Book

A year of preparation, planning and cutting went into making Tree of Codes by Jonathan Safran Foer. The book was rejected by several publishers because of the crazy amount of work it takes. Each page has a different dye-cut than its neighbours. Tree of Codes makes a new story by cutting into the author's favourite work, The Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz.
I think it really presents interesting challenges about the idea of what a book should be, appropriation in art and the place of story-telling in installation.

Shredded Art

I love it when you're having an ordinary morning.... and then you come across something extraordinary.
My brain can't quite dismantle how Brazilian artist Simone Lourenço puts these paper beauties together but I just know that they are wonderful and it made me happy to find them this morning.
Happier than the thought of my dentist appointment makes me.

Found on iartu.

Cool Invites to Cool Things

It must be pretty cool to get invited to the Fashion Week in New York. Cooler still to get some of these goodies in the mail/at the show. I am not that cool. I am still hanging out with the aforementioned lazy cats. But I am a sucker for great invites, great stationery and anything that takes mail outside of it's usual box. ALL PUN INTENDED!

Super duper cool. Spotted at Refinery 29.

Paper Cut Preliminaries

So as I mentioned before, I signed up for a Paper Cutting Workshop at The Paper Place. It happened last night and I had tons of fun. Our instructor, Nick Rubi, was all kinds of sweet and he got us working right away. He talked a lot about his process, namely how he likes to do some quick sketches and then translate them to paper cuts. He was pretty organic in his teaching style and very enthusiastic about us challenging ourselves. He was even kind enough to let us keep cutting past the end of the designated time. I really had a wonderful time. Paper cutting is incredibly involved and you get really into it really fast. It was nice to focus on such a delicate task for however long it would take to complete. Here's some of the treats from the workshop!

My own little hearts. My husband says they look like flies.

These are two of the cards we started with. I haven't decide who I will mail them to...

I traced this from this beautiful that had all these black and white images of flowers and plants.

This is the end product! I'm pretty happy with it. SO happy I decided it gets to hang out with the hand-woven flower from Peru, given to me by my darling friend Camille.

Shiny Happy Paper

Blown away by the detailed work of Britteny Lee. The colours and the images are fantastic but it is almost unreal how she has been able to create such intricate images using paper. When I came across this on Paper Crave, the work instantly made me smile. I am now even more excited about my upcoming workshop run by The Paper Place in Toronto that is entirely based on paper cutting! How inspiring!
